Term Explanation
Personal Data Any information about an individual that is personal to that individual and could be used to identify them.  This can include facts and options.
Facts include name, address, telephone number, medical information and date of birth.
Opinions include beliefs, sexual preference and political opinions.
Data Subject The person the data is being stored about.
Data User The person who has access to the data as part of their job.
Data Controller The person in the business or organisation who needs to apply for permission to collect the personal data.
Information Commissioner The person who enforces the Data Protection Act.
